A rabbit is the animal small children are most likely to have touched. They turn up at petting zoos, in classrooms and in half the picture books published, and a child who has held one has a physical memory to bring to the page — the ears are soft, the nose moves, it is warmer than you expect.
The ears are the drawing. One up, one folded over, which is worth pointing out because it is the detail that makes the rabbit look alive rather than symmetrical. Children colouring symmetrical animals tend to colour both halves identically; a bunny with one bent ear quietly breaks that habit.
The carrot and the clover give the page somewhere to go after the animal is done. A carrot with its green top still attached is a small piece of information most four-year-olds do not have — that the orange part grows underneath and the leaves grow above — and it is easier to say while colouring one than at a table.

How to Use This Coloring Page
- Talk about the two ears. One is up and one is folded. Noticing that they are different is worth more than colouring them neatly.
- Colour the carrot in two parts. Orange root, green top. Then ask which half was underground.
- Count the fence posts. They are evenly spaced and there are only a few, which makes them the easiest honest counting on the sheet.
