A Christmas tree is a triangle covered in circles with a star on top, which makes it one of the best shape pages of the year without ever being presented as one. Young children recognise it instantly, and that recognition is what keeps them at the table long enough to finish.
The ornaments are the counting lesson. They are small, round and nearly identical, and there are enough of them that counting means touching each one once and keeping track — real one-to-one correspondence. Colouring them is also the first pattern most children make on purpose: two colours taking turns along a garland is an AB pattern whether or not anyone calls it that.
The three presents under the tree are rectangles with ribbons, in three sizes. They are the easy part of the page, big flat areas with straight edges, and they invite the obvious question of what is inside. Nobody has ever needed help answering that one.

How to Use This Coloring Page
- Count the ornaments, touching each one. One touch, one number. It is slower than reciting and it is the skill that actually matters.
- Pick two colours and take turns. Along one garland, this one then that one. That is a pattern, made by hand.
- Save the star for last. Five points, one colour, on top. Finishing on the star is the paper version of putting it on the tree.
