Dragons are the subject older children ask for most and the one this library never had. This one is drawn properly: hundreds of overlapping scales running the length of the body, membraned wings with visible ribs, and a tail that curls back on itself around the rocks.
Scales are unusually good colouring practice. They are small, they repeat, and they sit at every angle, so a child has to keep turning the paper and adjusting their grip rather than settling into one comfortable stroke. That variety is what actually builds control, and it happens without a single instruction.
Because no dragon has ever been photographed, nothing here can be wrong. A child who has grown out of being told which colour a butterfly is can make every decision on this page themselves — and at eight or nine, being trusted with that is often the difference between finishing a drawing and abandoning it.

How to Use This Coloring Page
- Pick the scale colours first. Two or three colours alternating across the scales reads far better than one flat tone, and deciding before starting saves a long stretch of guessing.
- Save the wings for last. They are the largest open areas on the page and the easiest to finish, which makes them a good reward after the slow work of the scales.
- Ask for the story. Where does it live, is it dangerous, what is it looking at? The answers usually change what colours the child reaches for, and the drawing becomes theirs rather than ours.
