About This Coloring Page

Trains are the most orderly thing in a small child's world. Everything is in a line, everything is coupled to the thing before it, and the whole arrangement moves in one direction along a track that is already drawn for it. Children who like sorting and lining things up — which is most of them, at some point — recognise a train immediately as their kind of object.

That order is what makes this a genuinely useful colouring page rather than just a nice one. The engine and its two carriages are a sequence, and a sequence can be patterned: red, blue, red, or engine dark and carriages light. Deciding a rule and then following it across three shapes is early algebraic thinking, and it arrives here as a decision about crayons.

The track underneath adds the repetitive work. Sleeper after sleeper, evenly spaced, running the width of the page — the same steady left-to-right motion that writing will ask for later, practised without anyone mentioning writing.

How to Use This Coloring Page

  1. Decide a pattern before starting. Ask which carriage gets which colour and whether the rule repeats. Choosing the rule first is the part that does the thinking; filling it in afterwards is the reward.
  2. Colour the track left to right. Working along the sleepers in one direction builds the same sweep handwriting needs, and it keeps the spacing even.
  3. Add the smoke last. The puffs are large, soft shapes with no wrong answer, which makes them the right place to finish after the precision of the wheels.
