A black cat is the one Halloween subject that is also just a cat, and that is why it works for the youngest children. Nothing about it needs explaining or softening. It sits on a fence, its tail curls, the moon is out. A two-year-old sees a cat; a six-year-old sees Halloween; the page is the same drawing either way.
The obvious joke is that a black cat can be coloured any colour at all. Most children go straight for black and then discover that a solid black shape hides every line they just worked around, which is a real lesson in how outlines work. The ones who pick orange or purple instead have made a decision, and a decision is the part of a colouring page that is actually theirs.

- Ask what colour the cat should be. It is called a black cat, and it does not have to be one. Let them decide out loud before the first crayon goes down.
- Do the fence slats one at a time. Each slat is a long thin rectangle with two edges to stay inside, and there are enough of them for real fine-motor practice.
- Find the moon and name its shape. A crescent is a word most children do not have yet, and a picture of one is the easiest place to hand it over.
