Christmas Elf Coloring Page

Ages 3-8 Printable PDF

About This Coloring Page

An elf is a person-shaped character, which makes this page useful in a way the animals are not. Hat, ears, hands, legs, shoes: a child can point to each part on the page and then find it on themselves, and the pointed ears and curly shoes make the game funnier, because those are the parts that do not match.

The stripes on the socks are the fine-motor work. Each stripe is a narrow band with an edge on both sides, several in a row, and alternating two colours down the leg is the first pattern most children make on purpose. The bell on the hat and the bow on the present are small round details for a child who likes the careful parts.

The toy train at the elf's feet is the question the page asks: who is it for? Most children decide quickly and then explain at length, and a colouring page that comes with its own story keeps a child at the table far longer than the picture alone would.

How to Use This Coloring Page

  1. Point to the ears — his, then yours. Body words stick when a child finds them in two places, and pointed ears get a laugh every time.
  2. Stripe the socks in two colours. One, then the other, all the way down. Say the colours out loud as you go.
  3. Ask who the train is for. Then ask what the elf will make next. The answer is usually a whole workshop.
