Christmas Lights Coloring Page

About This Coloring Page

A string of lights is a row of the same shape repeated, which is exactly what a two- or three-year-old is ready for: one big round bulb, then the next, then the next, each with its own small cap and the wire running between them. There is nothing to get wrong, and the page looks finished the moment the first bulb is filled.

The row is where counting and pattern hide. Count the bulbs before any colour goes on, then decide: all different, or two colours in turn, or the same colour as the lights on your own house. A child who picks a pattern and keeps it to the end of the wire has done something harder than it looks.

The wire is one long curve from one side of the page to the other, and following it with a finger before the crayon is a tracing exercise in disguise. The stars around the string are the small targets for a child who wants more. Ask where the lights go, and who climbs up to hang them, and the page has a story.

How to Use This Coloring Page

  1. Count the bulbs first. Touch each one as you say the number. Then decide how many colours you need — that is counting with a reason.
  2. Follow the wire with a finger. One long curve, bulb to bulb. Then trace it with the crayon without lifting.
  3. Pick a pattern and keep it. Two colours in turn, all along the wire. Saying it out loud each time helps it stick.
