Giraffe Coloring Page
About This Coloring Page
A giraffe is the first animal most children learn as a comparison rather than a shape. It is not just tall, it is taller than — taller than the child, taller than the fence, tall enough to eat from the top of a tree. This drawing puts the reason in the picture: the neck is stretched up and the mouth is already at the leaves, so the height has a purpose a two-year-old can see.
The patches are what make it worth colouring. They are irregular, they cover the whole body and neck, and each one is a closed shape with an edge. Filling forty-odd of them is a long stretch of careful work, and unlike most careful work it produces a visible pattern at the end, which is the thing that keeps a child going through it.
The tree, the hills and the clouds are the recovery. Big open shapes, no edges that matter much, and a sun that takes ten seconds. Ending on the easy half is what turns a demanding page into a finished one rather than an abandoned one.

How to Use This Coloring Page
- Stand up and be a giraffe first. Reach as high as you can, then look at the picture. Height is an idea a child understands with their body long before they understand it as a word.
- Try two colours for the patches. Alternating them turns the spots into a pattern a child made on purpose rather than a body they filled in. It also keeps them at the table for all forty.
- Do the neck top to bottom. One long controlled run down the longest line on the page. It is the best single piece of hand-control practice this sheet offers.
