A hedgehog is an animal defined by its texture, which makes it unusually good to colour. The spines are drawn as rows of small repeated shapes across the whole back, and filling them is the closest a colouring page gets to genuine handwriting practice: the same short stroke, again and again, in a slightly different place each time.
The face is deliberately the opposite. It is round, open and soft, and it sits right next to all that spikiness. Children pick that contrast up without being prompted — prickly outside, friendly inside — and it is worth naming aloud, because it is the same idea that makes them cautious about the real animal in a garden.
Everything around it is autumn: acorns, a mushroom, fallen leaves, a cut stump with its rings showing. Those give the page its counting and its loose ending at once. The acorns can be counted, the leaves can be any colour a child likes, and the stump rings are one continuous curl each — a satisfying, forgiving thing to finish on.

How to Use This Coloring Page
- Do the spines in short strokes. One small mark per spine rather than a back-and-forth scribble. It is the same controlled stroke handwriting will need, and it makes the finished animal look right.
- Count the acorns. There are only a few, which is what makes them countable. Small sets a child can take in at a glance are where number sense actually starts.
- Talk about prickly and soft. Spines then face, in that order, naming both. Two words attached to two things they are already looking at beats two words in a book.
