This is the most detailed sheet in the set, and it is aimed squarely at the child who has started complaining that colouring pages are too easy. The mermaid's tail is drawn in overlapping scales, her hair falls in long separate strands, and the seabed behind her is filled with fish, seaweed and bubbles. Finishing it takes more than one sitting, which for a seven-year-old is a feature rather than a problem.
The scales are where the real work happens. They are the natural place to try shading -- pressing harder at one edge of each scale and lighter at the other, so the tail looks curved instead of flat. That single technique is usually a child's first taste of drawing rather than filling in, and a mermaid's tail is a far more motivating place to learn it than an exercise sheet.
Underwater scenes also carry a lot of language. Coral, seaweed, bubbles, fins, scales, current -- these are words children half-know from books and cartoons, and colouring each one while you name it is what moves a word from half-known to owned.

How to Use This Coloring Page
- Expect it to take two sittings. Say so at the start. A child who knows the page is meant to be long does not read stopping as failing, and comes back to it.
- Try shading the scales. Press harder along one edge of each scale and lighter across the rest. It is the first step from colouring into drawing.
- Blend two blues in the water. Overlaying a light blue and a darker one is easier than it looks and immediately makes the sea look deep.
- Name the sea life together. Coral, seaweed, fins, bubbles. Naming things the child is already looking at is the point where vocabulary actually sticks.
