Vehicles are the subject that reliably reaches children who have decided colouring is not for them. This one is drawn with hard straight edges and clean panels rather than soft animal curves, and the difference in feel is noticeable -- it looks less like a picture to decorate and more like an object to finish properly.
The checkered flags are the most interesting thing on the page. Filling alternate squares and leaving the rest white is a genuine test of attention: a child has to hold a rule in mind across dozens of small shapes and notice immediately when they break it. Most children find this absorbing rather than tedious, and it is exactly the kind of self-correcting task Montessori materials are built around, because the mistake is visible without anybody pointing it out.
The car body is the reward for that patience. It is one large, clean, uninterrupted area, and children almost always attack it with a single bold colour after the fiddly flag work is done. Letting them choose a racing number to add afterwards keeps them on the page a few minutes longer.

How to Use This Coloring Page
- Do the flags first. The checkered pattern needs full concentration, and full concentration is available at the start of a session, not the end.
- Say the rule out loud. "Colour one, skip one." Naming the rule before they begin is what makes the mistakes visible to the child rather than to you.
- Let them pick a racing number. Adding a number to the car turns a finished page into their car, and ownership is what gets it stuck to the fridge.
- Line up the cones in colour order. Alternating the cones is a second, easier pattern for a child not yet ready for the flags.
