Worksheet preview — complete repeating patterns using shapes and colors. Includes AB, ABB, and ABC pattern types.
About This Worksheet
Patterns are the heartbeat of mathematics. Before children can add, subtract, or multiply, they need to recognize that the world follows predictable rules. This worksheet introduces three types of repeating patterns — AB (red, blue, red, blue), ABB (circle, square, square, circle, square, square), and ABC (star, heart, triangle, star, heart, triangle) — and asks your child to figure out what comes next.
Pattern recognition is one of the strongest predictors of later math success. When a child can look at a sequence and predict the next element, they are doing the same kind of logical reasoning that algebra demands years later. The difference is that now they are working with colorful shapes instead of variables — but the thinking is identical.
This worksheet progresses from simple two-element patterns to more complex three-element sequences. Each pattern is presented visually with shapes and colors, making it accessible to pre-readers. If your child finds the AB patterns easy, celebrate that mastery and use the ABB and ABC rows to provide a satisfying challenge.

How to Use This Worksheet
- Build physical patterns first. Before the worksheet, create patterns with real objects: red block, blue block, red block, blue block. Ask “What comes next?” Once they get it with objects, the worksheet will feel natural.
- Read the pattern aloud. Point to each element and say its name: “Circle, square, circle, square, circle...” The rhythmic repetition helps children hear the pattern, not just see it.
- Cover and predict. Cover the last element with your finger and ask your child to guess what is underneath. Then reveal the answer. This builds prediction confidence.
- Let them create their own. After completing the worksheet, give your child blank paper and ask them to invent their own pattern. Creating patterns is harder than completing them and shows deeper understanding.
