Eight is when backward words become manageable, and that is the real step up. Finding a word spelled in reverse means holding the spelling in mind and running it backwards -- expect the first few to take longer than you think they should.
Every puzzle on this page uses a 13x13 grid with 14 words of 4 to 9 letters, placed left-to-right, top-to-bottom, diagonally down, diagonally up and right-to-left (backwards). Expect about 20 minutes per sheet. The skill being built is reading words in reverse.
Why These Sheets Are Built This Way
Finding a word spelled in reverse is a different cognitive task from finding one spelled forwards. Your child has to hold the spelling in working memory and run it backwards while scanning, which is noticeably more demanding than reading left to right. It is also the skill that separates a medium puzzle from a hard one.
These three sheets use a 13x13 grid with fourteen words, running in five directions: left-to-right, top-to-bottom, both diagonals, and right-to-left. Only horizontal words are reversed -- backwards diagonals wait until ten. Expect the first few of these to take longer than you think they should, and expect the reversed words to be the last ones found.
The vocabulary steps up to match. Space, dinosaurs and world geography carry words like asteroid, carnivore and continent -- long enough to be genuinely searchable, and sitting squarely in what most eight year olds are covering at school. An eight year old who finds Triassic in a grid tends to ask what it means, which is the whole idea.
How to Use These Worksheets
- Say that some words run backwards. Do not make it a surprise. Knowing to check right-to-left is the technique; discovering it by exhaustion is just frustration.
- Use a highlighter, not a pen. On a 13x13 grid words cross constantly, and a highlighter lets your child see through their own marks.
- Let them time themselves on the second sheet. Eight year olds are usually motivated by beating their own time, and a timed second attempt is what turns a scanning method into a habit.
