Which word search should you print first?

A word search only teaches something if your child can actually read the words in it. These puzzles are grouped by how much reading they ask for, so it helps to start below your child's level rather than above it.

• Ages 4-6, just starting. Begin with the easy animals word search. It hides eight familiar words left-to-right only, with a word bank to check against, so the puzzle is about recognizing letters rather than hunting in every direction.
• Ages 5-7, reading simple words. Move to the colors, food and body parts puzzles. These add vertical words and stretch to ten or twelve items, but the vocabulary is still everyday language.
• Ages 5-8, confident readers. The seasons, spring and weather puzzles carry twelve themed words each and double as science and nature vocabulary practice.

Getting more out of a word search than quiet time

Word searches are easy to hand over as a distraction. A couple of small changes turn the same sheet into reading practice.

• Read the word bank aloud together before starting. Naming the words first is what turns the puzzle from letter-matching into reading.
• Let your child trace along a row with a finger before circling anything. Tracking left to right is the same skill reading uses.
• Skip the timer. Speed pushes children back into scanning for letter shapes instead of reading words.
• One puzzle at a time. A stack of seven printed at once tends to end in an abandoned pile.
