Dolphin Coloring Page

Ages 2-7 Printable PDF

About This Coloring Page

Ask a group of four-year-olds to name a sea animal and the dolphin comes first, before the shark and long before the turtle. It is the friendly one, the one that jumps, and this page draws it doing exactly the thing it is known for: clear of the water, mid-leap, with the splash still in the air.

The dolphin itself is one long smooth curve from nose to tail, with a fin on top and two flippers, which makes it an easy, satisfying shape to fill for a child who is still learning to stay inside a line. The wave underneath is the opposite: a rolling edge with a curl at the top and splashes breaking off it, small bounded shapes where control gets built.

The sun and the two clouds are there so the page has a sky, and so a child who finishes the dolphin quickly has somewhere to go next. The page also asks a quiet question worth answering out loud: is a dolphin a fish? It is not, and a child who learns that at the kitchen table will tell everyone.

How to Use This Coloring Page

  1. Do the dolphin in one go. Nose to tail, one colour, all the way to the edge. Finish it before anything else so the page already looks done.
  2. Colour the splashes one drop at a time. Small shapes with a clear edge, several of them. That is where the careful work is.
  3. Ask whether a dolphin is a fish. It breathes air, like us. Then ask how it gets the air — by jumping up, like in the picture.
