Santa's Sleigh Coloring Page

Ages 3-8 Printable PDF

About This Coloring Page

The sleigh is the part of the Christmas story a child can actually picture moving, and this page catches it mid-flight: one reindeer out in front, the sleigh behind, two rooftops below and a moon above. A picture with an action in it keeps a child at the table longer than a picture of a thing, because there is a story to tell while the colouring happens.

The pile of presents is where the counting hides. Each one is a box with a ribbon across it, stacked in the back of the sleigh, and a child who decides to colour every present a different colour will be busy for a long while and will count them more than once. The rooftops and the moon are big open shapes for broad strokes when the small work is done.

The reindeer's harness and the curved runners under the sleigh are the careful parts: long lines with an edge on both sides, the same control as writing between two lines. Ask where the sleigh is going next, and whose house that is below, and the page has written its own story.

How to Use This Coloring Page

  1. Count the presents first. Touch each one as you count. Then decide how many colours you need — that is one-to-one correspondence and a plan.
  2. Follow the runners under the sleigh. Two long curves from front to back. Stay between the lines; it is handwriting without the letters.
  3. Whose house is that? Point to a rooftop and ask. The answer is the rest of the story, told by the child.
