The tail is a set of separate panels laid side by side, and that turns this into the most useful colour-choosing page in the library. Every other sheet asks a child what colour something is. This one asks what colour each of eight things should be, one after another, with nothing at stake in getting it wrong.
Children handle that question in two clearly different ways. Some repeat a pattern around the fan; some make every feather a different colour. Both are worth doing and it is worth pointing out which one they chose, because most four-year-olds have never noticed that they made a decision at all.
The pumpkin and the fallen leaves anchor it to a season rather than to a single holiday, so the sheet is still usable through the whole of autumn rather than for one week in November.

How to Use This Coloring Page
- Count the tail feathers before starting. Knowing how many there are changes how a child plans the colours.
- Try repeating three colours around the fan. It is the simplest real pattern a young child can make and then see all at once.
- Compare the leaves to the ones outside. Two leaf shapes on the page and a pile of real ones on the ground is the shortest route from a worksheet to a walk.
