Whale Coloring Page

Ages 2-7 Printable PDF

About This Coloring Page

The whale is the biggest animal a child knows about, and this page draws it the way a child draws it: one enormous rounded body, a tail at the back, a smile at the front and a spout of water going straight up. It is the easiest animal on the shelf to fill, which makes it the right first page for a two-year-old who has just learned to hold a crayon.

The body is one large area with a clear edge all the way round, so a child can use broad strokes and still finish inside the line. The spout is the opposite: a narrow fan of small shapes rising from the top, where the careful work lives. The wave underneath and the sun above are open shapes for whoever wants more.

A whale also asks a question worth answering out loud: is it a fish? It is not, and the spout is the clue, because a whale comes up to breathe. A child who learns that at the kitchen table will tell everyone, and the page becomes the biggest animal and the biggest fact of the week.

How to Use This Coloring Page

  1. Do the whale in one go. Nose to tail, one colour, broad strokes. Finish it first so the page already looks done.
  2. Colour the spout one drop at a time. Small shapes with an edge, fanning out at the top. That is the careful part.
  3. Ask why the whale comes up. To breathe, like us. Then ask what the spout is — it is the whale breathing out.
