Zebra Coloring Page

About This Coloring Page

A zebra is a colouring page before any colour goes on it. The stripes are already there, drawn as outlined bands all over the body, and the first thing a child decides is which ones to fill. Every other one is the classic answer, and a child who works that out alone has just made a pattern on purpose for the first time.

Each stripe is a narrow curved band with an edge on both sides, and there are a lot of them: down the neck, across the body, round the legs. Filling them without wandering into the next one is more fine-motor control than most pages ask for, and because the result looks so obviously right when it is done, children keep going long after they would have left a plainer animal.

The tall grass and the flat-topped tree set the scene without crowding it. Ask where a zebra lives, what else lives there, and whether the lion from the other page could be hiding in that grass, and the page connects to the rest of the safari shelf.

How to Use This Coloring Page

  1. Decide the stripes before you start. Every other one, or all of them, or two colours in turn. Saying the plan out loud is the lesson.
  2. Work down the neck in order. One stripe, then the next, then the next. Stay between the lines; it is handwriting control in disguise.
  3. Ask what a zebra sounds like. Nobody knows, and guessing is the fun. Then ask what lives in the tall grass behind it.
