Hippo Coloring Page
About This Coloring Page
The hippo is the big one that lives in the river with only its eyes and ears showing, and the page draws it half in and half out: a huge round body standing in the water, a wide smiling mouth, two small ears, and a little bird perched on its back the way they really do.
The body is the largest closed shape in the whole library, made for a two-year-old with a fat crayon and one colour, and the water around it is a band of wavy lines for an older child to practise. The lily pads are circles with a notch, the reeds are tall lines, and the bird is the small face to do last.
Ask how big a hippo is next to them, and whether the bird is scared. It is not, because the hippo lets it ride, and that is the kind of fact a four-year-old tells everyone at dinner.

How to Use This Coloring Page
- Fill the hippo first. One enormous shape, one colour. It is the biggest thing on the page and it should look like it.
- Do the water in wavy lines. Side to side across the page, under the hippo. A wavy stroke with a reason.
- Finish with the bird. Small and bright, sitting on the back. Ask what it is saying to the hippo.
