Mittens Coloring Page

Ages 2-6 Printable PDF

About This Coloring Page

Mittens are the first thing a small child puts on and the first thing a small child loses, which is why these two are joined by a string. On the page that string is the point: two shapes that are the same, one on each side, and the question of whether they should match.

Each mitten is one big rounded shape with a thumb, easy for a two-year-old to fill, and the striped cuff at the bottom is a row of narrow bands for an older child to work through in turn. The snowflakes around them are small targets for whoever wants the fiddly bit.

Ask which hand each one goes on and let them hold a hand up to check. A four-year-old will get it wrong, look again, and get it right, and that is the whole lesson in left and right done without a worksheet.

How to Use This Coloring Page

  1. Decide if they match before you start. Same colour or different. Either is right; saying it out loud is the plan.
  2. Stripe the cuffs in two colours. One band, then the other, all the way down. That is a pattern and it stays inside narrow lines.
  3. Hold up a hand and find the thumb. Which mitten goes on which hand? Turn the page round and check.
