Seahorse Coloring Page

Ages 2-7 Printable PDF

About This Coloring Page

The seahorse is a fish shaped like a horse with a tail like a spring, and every child who hears that wants to see one. The page draws it big and close up: a curved body with a ridge of bumps down the back, a long snout, and a tail that curls round a strand of seaweed to hold on.

The body is one tall rounded shape for broad strokes, the stripes across the belly are a row of narrow bands for an older child to take turns on with two colours, and the curl of the tail is the pre-writing stroke: a spiral to follow with a finger first and then a crayon. The bubbles going up and the shell on the sand are the small things to do last.

Ask why it holds on to the seaweed. So the water does not carry it away, and that fact, plus the one about seahorse dads carrying the eggs, is the kind a four-year-old repeats for a week.

How to Use This Coloring Page

  1. Follow the curl of the tail with one finger. Start at the body and spiral in. Then do it with a crayon; that is a spiral stroke.
  2. Stripe the belly in two colours. One band, then the other, all the way down. A pattern that stays inside narrow lines.
  3. Count the bubbles going up. From the seahorse to the top of the page. Then colour the shell and ask what is inside it.
