About This Worksheet

Space vocabulary is longer and less familiar than the words on the easy sheets, which is exactly what makes it a good step up. A child has to hold a longer string of letters in working memory while scanning, and that is the skill this sheet trains.

The grid is larger and words are placed diagonally as well as across and down. Expect this one to take a while -- that is intended. It suits a child who finishes the easy puzzles quickly and has started asking for something harder.

The word bank has 8 words in a 11x11 grid: Moon, Star, Earth, Comet, Orbit, Planet, Saturn, Galaxy.

How to Use This Worksheet

  1. Do the across and down words first. Let them clear the easy placements before you mention diagonals. Early wins buy patience for the hard part.
  2. Then hunt corner to corner. Show them one diagonal word yourself. Most children need to see it once before the idea lands.
  3. Talk about what the words mean. Ask which planet is biggest, or what an orbit is. Half the value of themed vocabulary is the conversation it starts.
  4. Go outside afterwards. Look at the moon, or find one planet. The connection between a word on paper and a thing in the sky is worth the trip.
