About This Worksheet

This sheet exists for the child who does not want to sit down. Sports vocabulary is motivating in a way that neutral word lists are not, and a motivated child will work through a harder puzzle than an unmotivated one ever will.

It is a medium puzzle: a larger grid, longer words, and diagonal placements. Suitable for roughly seven to eight, or any child who has outgrown the easy sheets.

The word bank has 8 words in a 12x12 grid: Soccer, Tennis, Chess, Trophy, Player, Score, Whistle, Helmet.

How to Use This Worksheet

  1. Ask which sports they play. Start with the words they have a stake in. Those get found first and build momentum for the rest.
  2. Time it, if they like that. Some children work far harder against a clock. Others freeze -- if yours is the second kind, skip this entirely.
  3. Split it over two sittings. A medium grid is genuinely long. Stopping halfway and coming back is a perfectly good outcome, not a failure.
  4. Play the sport afterwards. Find the word, then go outside and kick the ball. It is the cleanest possible reward for finishing.
